The sympathies of the British Chamber of Commerce in Mexico and all its members go out to those affected by the earthquake in Central Mexico on September 19, 2017. This comes just a few more extensive weeks after an earthquake impacted Southern Mexico on 7th September.

Mexico’s Federal, State and Local Governments activated their well-established response plans in order to support the individuals impacted as well as to assess damages.

According to the latest information on the 19th September incident, damages and casualties have been reported in parts of Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico City. Virtually all offices, plants and Tourist destination and relevant infrastructure are functioning well. While the international airports in Mexico City and Puebla suspended operations as a standard precaution on the 19th of September, both airports reopened within 4 hours and are fully operational.

While damages and casualties were also experienced in a number of municipalities in Oaxaca and Chiapas from the 7th September event, as of today major cities including Oaxaca City, Huatulco and Puerto Escondido are back on their feet and ready to receive tourists.

Additionally, we are thankful to report that no other major industries and their locations in Mexico have been affected by recent events; also the international seaports are functional.

Mexico is continuing with the implementation of structural reforms modernising the country and business environment for the future.

Given these facts, there is no reason for visitors to cancel travel plans to Mexico. Our important Energy Day event on 3rd October  will go ahead with many important topics to be discussed.

Many of our friends have asked what they can to do support during this time, and on behalf of all our members and the country at large we encourage our friends in other countries to show their support by continuing with their travel plans to our country and its destinations, which can only have a positive impact on local communities

The British Chamber of Commerce, Mexico City, and all our members and staff, are focused on ensuring visitors receive any assistance necessary while continuing with their existing and future travel plans, and recognise that in times like these our bonds can only grow stronger.

Any important updates on the situation will be shared as new information becomes available.
