How to Stay Safe in Mexico? |
On the 30th August the Chamber’s Security and Workplace Safety Group held their first event; a presentation on how to stay safe in Mexico followed by networking cocktails.
John Kewell, head of this new Business Sector Group began the presentation by thanking his group for their support and reminding his audience that the group remains open to new members.
José Luis Pichardo then gave a presentation highlighting the main threats to safety in Mexico, especially extortion and kidnapping. Mexico today is number 4 in the world for cases of kidnappings. José Luis explained that there are many precautions individuals can take, including; not always taking the same routes to work nor sticking to a strict routine - which criminals can learn, taking care over who has access to our details by considering the information we make public on our Facebook and other social networking profiles and business cards, in addition to leaving the house having clearly in mind where we are going, rather than leaving our fate down to strangers or our GPS, and many more.
It is important to have a plan and show criminals that we are taking our personal safety seriously. While many tend to put acts of delinquency down to organised crime, this is not always the case. Criminals are usually individuals looking for an opportunity and all are contemplating their probability of success when considering committing a crime. As individuals we need to take personal responsibility for our personal safety and thereby lower the criminal’s probability of success by using our common sense and not just convince ourselves that “this will not happen to me.”
